Background of the Study:
Unemployment is a pervasive socioeconomic challenge that significantly impacts mental health, particularly in regions with limited job opportunities. In Jigawa State, high unemployment rates have been linked to increased levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. The psychological burden associated with joblessness extends beyond financial hardship, affecting self-esteem, social status, and overall life satisfaction (Okeke, 2023). Unemployed individuals often experience a sense of hopelessness and social isolation, which can exacerbate existing mental health issues or contribute to the development of new disorders.
In Jigawa State, the lack of employment opportunities is compounded by other socioeconomic factors such as low educational attainment and inadequate support systems. The prolonged period of unemployment not only strains the mental health of individuals but also undermines the social fabric of communities. Research indicates that unemployment can lead to negative coping mechanisms, including substance abuse and risky behaviors, which further deteriorate mental health outcomes (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the stigma associated with unemployment can result in reduced access to mental health services, as affected individuals may be reluctant to seek help due to shame or fear of discrimination.
Government initiatives aimed at addressing unemployment and promoting mental health awareness have had mixed results, with many interventions failing to reach the most vulnerable groups. There is a pressing need for comprehensive studies that explore the direct effects of unemployment on mental health in Jigawa State, while also considering the mediating role of other social determinants. This study will evaluate the effects of unemployment on mental health by assessing the prevalence of mental health disorders among unemployed individuals and examining the psychosocial factors that contribute to these outcomes (Fatima, 2025). The insights gained will be critical for designing targeted interventions that address both economic and mental health needs in the region.
Statement of the Problem :
In Jigawa State, unemployment has emerged as a critical factor contributing to poor mental health outcomes. The economic hardship associated with joblessness leads to increased stress, anxiety, and depression among affected individuals. Despite the availability of some government programs aimed at mitigating unemployment, many residents continue to experience long-term joblessness, which in turn exacerbates mental health issues (Umar, 2023). The lack of affordable mental health services and the stigma surrounding mental illness further hinder efforts to address this growing problem.
Unemployed individuals in Jigawa State often face social isolation and a loss of purpose, which contribute to deteriorating mental health. Moreover, the psychological impact of unemployment is compounded by financial insecurity, which limits access to necessary healthcare and support services. These challenges create a cycle where poor mental health reduces the likelihood of gaining employment, thereby perpetuating the economic and psychological distress. The failure to effectively address unemployment and its mental health repercussions places a significant burden on the healthcare system and undermines community well-being (Saleh, 2024).
This study seeks to systematically investigate the impact of unemployment on mental health in Jigawa State, identifying the key factors that mediate this relationship and assessing the effectiveness of existing interventions. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations for policies and programs that can alleviate the mental health burden associated with unemployment, thereby improving the overall quality of life for affected individuals.
